    Radford College Wigg Sports Centre

    The Radford College Wigg Sports Centre is a state-of-the-art facility that supports a broad range of sporting and co-curricular activities for students and the wider community.


    Vortex Fire played a critical role in the development as Fire Engineering Consultants, ensuring that the insulation materials used throughout the facility complied with all relevant fire safety codes and regulations as mandated by the National Construction Code. This process involved lab testing and reporting in accordance with AS 1530.1, including the assessment of insulation samples from the building’s walls to verify compliance with the combustibility provisions of the Code.


    Through this work, Vortex Fire has helped ensure that the Wigg Sports Centre continues to provide high-quality sporting amenities while upholding the highest standards of fire safety for students, staff, and the broader community.


  • Questacon – National Science and Technology Centre

    Questacon – National Science and Technology Centre

    The Questacon National Science and Technology Centre houses a wide range of fun, interactive learning experiences that are aimed at stimulating engagement in science and technology. Visitors to the centre are treated to various hands-on activities and experiments ranging from interactive robots to the infamous earthquake experience.


    Originally designed in 1985 by renowned architect Lawrence Nield, the building was recognised for its architectural excellence with the awarding of the prestigious Canberra Medallion in 1989. The design incorporated advanced construction materials for its time and featured a prominent glass foyer that contributes to a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.


    Vortex Fire played a crucial role in the sprinkler refurbishment works for the development, ensuring the historic Canberra building can continue to bring joy to science and technology enthusiasts for many years to come. In our capacity as Fire Engineering Consultants for the project, Vortex Fire ensured that all refurbishment works remained compliant with the applicable fire safety standards and regulations stipulated by the National Construction Code, through modelling and testing of the sprinkler system performance.

    University Of Toronto

    The new cross-disciplinary campus hub is designed to prioritize student-centered learning, moving away from traditional single-purpose lecture halls. The innovative design expands the campus with a diverse learning landscape, featuring flexible and hybrid spaces that can accommodate both large gatherings and small breakout sessions. This design approach aims to blur the lines between the virtual and physical realms, enhancing the overall learning experience.

     

    Vortex Fire played a crucial role in this project as the Building Code Consultant, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and regulations. Additionally, Vortex Fire provided a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling analysis for the interconnected floor voids throughout the building, contributing to the safety and functionality of the space.

     

    The project is a result of a partnership with ZAS Architects + Interiors, combining expertise to create a dynamic and innovative campus hub that meets the evolving needs of modern education.

  • Newton’s Grove School, Mississauga, Canada

    Newton’s Grove School, Mississauga, Canada

    Newton’s Grove School in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, moved into its new permanent location in December 2017. The development involved transforming an existing two-storey industrial building into a progressive private school for kindergarten to grade 12 students.


    Vortex Fire served as the building code and accessibility consultant for the change of use from an industrial building to a school. This required a thorough analysis of the existing structure under Part 11 of the Ontario Building Code and close collaboration with the architect to integrate key design features and maximize natural light.

    OCAD University’s Campus for the Connected World on Toronto’s Waterfront is a new facility dedicated to research and innovation. It houses initiatives focused on innovation training, design thinking, Big Data design, and accelerator capacity to support commercialization and bring design skills to emerging companies. Vortex Fire served as the building code consultant for the project, preparing the Ontario Building Code compliance report.

    Public Authority For Applied Education And Training


    The development is located in Jahra Governate, about 33 km from the center of Kuwait City and the airport. It consists of college buildings for Technology, Business, Health Science, and Basic Education studies, along with a common-use facility building connected to basement car parking. Each college consists of three sections: one for males, one for females, and a middle section used as an office building for instructors. Vortex Fire has been involved in developing a bespoke fire strategy for the development.

  • Centennial College –Progress Campus A Block

    Centennial College –Progress Campus A Block

    Centennial College of Applied Arts and Technology, a renowned diploma- and degree-granting institution located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is undergoing a significant transformation. The project involves the redesign of Centennial’s A-Block, which will serve as a distinctive gateway to the College’s Progress Campus. The six-storey, mass timber addition will provide one hundred and fifty thousand gross square feet of space, including renovations to the existing A-Block building. The building will be constructed using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and glue-laminated beam and columns (glulam).

     

    Vortex Fire Consulting served as the Building Code Consultant for this project. In this role, Vortex Fire Consulting developed a safe approach to the use of mass timber while ensuring compliance with the Ontario Building Code.

    Canoe Landing Community Recreation Centre & Schools Complex


    The Canoe Landing project is a 160,000 square foot multi-purpose structure in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The project contains a community centre, Public and Catholic elementary schools, along with a childcare centre. Both schools have their own gymnasium with a mezzanine running track. The schools share an outdoor recreation space, and both have access to the dance studio, practice kitchen, and indoor playground housed in the community centre. Vortex Fire served as the building code consultant for the project.
