OUR IMPACT
Vortex Fire served as the building code consultants on the Making Home project at 97 Victoria St. N in downtown Kitchener! This meaningful project for The Working Centre involved the adaptive reuse of an existing 2-storey building, with a new third storey and side addition using mass timber creating a 26,000 sq ft community facility with 38 units of affordable transitional housing, a community clinic, and essential support services for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The project presented unique and rewarding code challenges, navigating the complexity of adding a mass timber onto an existing structure, blending the old with the new while meeting current building code requirements. It was an honour to contribute our expertise and help bring this vision to life for the Kitchener community.
